Wrapping Teslas: Why Flush Handles and Frameless Doors Are Wrecking Your Layouts
Share
Tesla jobs keep showing up on wrap shop schedules: color changes, commercial fleet branding, and promo builds. On paper, they look incredibly easy. Smooth panels, almost no badges, and very little trim.
In practice, that is exactly why they punish loose prep. On a clean body, a stripe that drifts at a door gap or a logo sitting over a flush handle is the first thing the customer sees.
Frameless Doors and Heavy Bleed From above, a massive percentage of the Model 3 and Model Y is glass. Most commercial layouts end up entirely on the doors, rear quarters, front fenders, and the hatch.
The biggest prepress mistake on these models is the frameless door glass. The top edges of the doors are exposed when the glass drops. If you design a hard cut directly at the top of your artboard, it will look terrible. You must leave heavy bleed at the top edge so the installer can wrap inside the door jamb.
Flush Door Handles Tesla’s flush door handles look incredibly sleek, but they are a nightmare for typography. Keep phone numbers, URLs, and logos far away from the handle area. If an installer has to relief-cut a "0" or an "A" directly through a door handle, the client will reject it. Plan the handle as a strict no-print zone, not a billboard.
Cybertruck Creases The Cybertruck changes the usual wrap logic. There are almost no compound curves, but every crease is a hard visual break. Typography that crosses a crease looks broken from most viewing angles. Keep each line of copy inside a single flat plane and use the creases as built-in borders for your color blocks.
Don't Guess on the Year Tesla refreshes styling inside a generation. The Model 3 got new front and rear styling for 2024. If you use a 2019 template on a 2024 Highland refresh, your bumper graphics will land in the wrong zip code.
